Sail To Prevail – The National Disabled Sailing Program creates opportunities for disabled children and adults to overcome adversity through therapeutic sailing. Now in our 37th year of operation, Sail To Prevail serves more than 1,400 participants annually. Our participants have a wide range of disabilities, including spinal cord injury causing paraplegia and quadriplegia, amputees, developmental challenges, emotional disorders, pediatric cancer, and autism. The majority of our participants are children, ages 7 to 17, while our programs for military Veterans have also grown significantly in recent years.

The Adaptive Sailing program operates in the months of June, July and August, Monday through Friday, and weekends are by appointment or for special programs. We offer three distinct pathways for individuals to conquer their disability: (1) adaptive instructional sailing; (2) recreational sailing for children with critical illness; and (3) competitive sailing for individuals with disabilities.

Utilizing our fleet of five specially designed “Independence 20” adaptive sailboats, docked at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island, physically challenged participants are carefully boarded using a transfer lift, if necessary. They are safely secured into specially designed pivoting seats allowing them the freedom of movement to sail the boat. With guidance from US Sailing certified instructors, participants learn about safety, teamwork, the intricacies of all the deck hardware, trimming the sails, harnessing the wind, using the tiller, and sailing the boat!

The fee is $70 per boat for a two-hour sail. Full and partial scholarships are available for those who need financial assistance.

Up to five individuals, plus the instructor, can board each boat, so we can take groups up to 25. However, we suggest registering groups early (in the spring) to have multiple boats available at the same time.

Please visit our web site to download a registration/waiver form: http://sailtoprevail.org/registration. On this same web page, you can choose the date(s) and time(s) you would like to sail. For more information, while the program is in operation, please email: sailingdirector@sailtoprevail.org. Off-season, please email: allie@sailtoprevail.org. Our office phone number in Newort is: 401-849-8898.
