This free dance class series incorporates elements of meditation, yoga, modern, jazz, flamenco and African diasporic dance among other modalities of dance and body awareness designed for people over age 65 or people with mobility challenges. Though there is no prerequisite or qualification for being in class, participants of previous classes have identified as having Parkinson’s Disease, Cerebral Palsy or arthritis, being wheelchair users, or coming back to dance after an injury or long time away. Care partners, family members and friends of anyone wanting to participate are also welcome to join the class. We understand that everyone comes to class with a different story, bringing with them various emotions, ideas, struggles and triumphs, and regardless of where an individual is at, we are welcoming to all.

What we do in class:
We make time to become present and allow for awareness and acceptance of the state of our minds, bodies and spirit.
We focus attention on our breath, stretch and strengthen muscles, isolate body parts in movement, move in patterns and to rhythms, use our voices, create original movement, learn sequences of steps, and dance individually, with partners and as a group in either standing or seated positions.
We dance to live musical accompaniment and various genres of recorded music to enhance our movement, listening skills and emotive responses.
We have a good time! There is an emphasis on having fun and connecting with others. At the conclusion of each class there is time to mingle over light refreshments to promote socialization, community support and sharing of resources among the group.

Our goals:
To leave class feeling more energized and with greater body awareness and ease of motion
To promote supportive networking among participants
To promote dance as a means of wellness for individuals, families and communities
To break down barriers to dance by offering classes that foster inclusion among a diverse group of people
